What is Karst Topography???? Karst Topography is a geological formation found when water- soluble rock such as dolomite or gypsum is dissolved by water. This creates a network of fissures that allow runoff and surface water to move rapidly and unpredictably. South Bass Island is composed of a layer of insoluble carbonate rock on top of dolomite and gypsum. Over time, areas of the underlying rock have dissolved, resulting in a network of channels that move water and waste from the islands’ surface through the permeable rock much faster than would normally be the case.
